back again in the new year

just when i thought i'd be too lazy to ever post in this blog, i find myself bored enough at work to attempt blogging - even if only to occupy myself. seems this year has started out not so well, with bad news ranging from wars, economic turmoil and personally, news of deaths and tragic accidents happening to people i come in contact with whether at work or through friends. it begs the question of really, what do we hold on to in life, when things which we thought could give us security collapse one by one, like a house made from cards?

i see most people intent on following the conventional path - getting a good job which pays well, so they can afford the things deemed by society (or the middle class ones anyway) as necessities or little luxuries, including setting up a cozy and attractive home, car(s), vacations and such. i don't deny that i sometimes desire those things too. but is that all we can look forward to, or aspire towards in life? have people whose goals are different found something more meaningful in life?

edit: this post was started such a long time ago that i myself have forgotten about it. but it seems the questions are still pertinent now. i've just experienced another wave of events which again got me thinking - about how life is not ours to cling on to, and things can change in just a wink. are these signs that now is the time to seriously evaluate our lives, and question where we put our trust? what is our solid foundation, and is there anything unchanging in this mortal life, other than God and His faithfulness?

it seems almost everything in life is in a constant state of change. but yet, i still tend to take things for granted. how scary it is, to know the world as i know it can collapse without the slightest warning. what would i do without God and those people He has given to me? [12th July 09]
